Folk songs are composed and performed by illiterate or semi-literate people, either in groups or individually. It is a spontaneous expression in easy language, local dialect and simple tune. Bangladesh has a rich tradition of folk music. These songs tell about social inequality and poverty, about the material world and the supernatural. Our folk music varies from region to region. They are classified into Bhawaiya, Bhatiyali, Baul, Murshidi, Marfati, Kabigan, Leto, Alkap, Gambhira etc. Folk songs have been written on the culture, festivals, views of life, natural beauty, rivers and rural life.
